My Irish Rock Greats
I love St Patrick’s day for many reasons but most of all because of the increased air time of two #Irish Rock legends Phil & Rory – for those that know me I am not talking about my musical buddy’s (who are musical legends in their own right :o)
I am talking about #PhilLynott and #RoryGallagher –
A rhythm/lead guitarist and a bass guitarist….two men who brought Irish Rock & Blues to the world.
Rory Gallagher was born in #Ballyshannon, County #Donegal, and brought up in #Cork, Gallagher recorded solo albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s, after forming the band Taste during the late 1960s. I encourage my students to listen to Rory, to highlight his skill and ability that came about due this passion, practice and natural ability.
Gallagher’s albums have sold in excess of 30 million copies worldwide. Gallagher received a liver transplant in 1995, but sadly died of complications later that year in London, at the age of 47.

Phil Lynott was and still is a legendary Irish musician, singer and songwriter. His most commercially successful group was Thin Lizzy, of which he was a founding member, the principal songwriter, lead vocalist and bassist. He later also found success as a solo artist – Phil was an excellent Front man and knew how to capture the energy of the audience and stir it up. He was a one off, but I do encourage the bands I work with to watch him….I also liked him because he was a team player, and willing to step aside for more talented musicians.
Did you know that he actually learnt to play the bass guitar well into his musical career? He stepped aside from being lead guitarist to ensure the band performed to the best of their ability – Band’s starting out need to think about this….ones in operation need to draw on other member’s passion and ability.
Did you know Phil’s song “Yellow Pearl” (1982), was a No. 14 hit in the UK and became the theme tune to Top of the Pops?
Born in England and raised in Ireland, Lynott always considered himself to be Irish. His friend and Thin Lizzy bandmate Scott Gorham said in 2013: “Phil was so proud of being Irish. No matter where he went in the world, if we were talking to a journalist and they got something wrong about#Ireland, he’d give the guy a history lesson. It meant a lot to him. In the early 1980s, he purchased several properties in #Howth, County Dublin, one of which, White Horses, was a 50th birthday present for his mother.
